Treatment
Current treatment options for hyponatremia due to SIADH consist primarily of fluid restriction (0.8 – 1.5 L/day) and intravenous saline infusion. These treatment options are not always effective and can in certain cases be difficult to administer. Saline infusion has the potential to cause serious side effects. Vasopressin antagonists, a new class of pharmacological drugs, are a treatment alternative for selected patients with hyponatremia due to SIADH. It is, of course, important to treat the underlying cause of SIADH whenever possible.
